Similar to Roberto Parada, Tim O'Brien engaged in rigorous training at Paier College of Art and he is now able to produce realistic paintings in a quick time frame. He painted the picture above in 24 hours.

Time

Time is not of the essence when one has taken the time to learn fine skills. For example, Roberto Parada spent 5 years after he graduated from art school to develop skills that allow him to produce flawless paintings on an extremely short time line. Parada painted the painting above in a day and a half. He came to my school last semester to give a lecture an showed us detailed shots of this painting and it was flawless. There was no brushiness or rushed marks to be seen.

Re-Interpreting Antiquity

Since major human themes do not change with time there is great value in looking to antiquity for guidence for creating powerful images. For example, compare Dr. Jeffery Mim's painting to Michelangelo's painting of Jonah. Mims was able to achieve such a powerfully dynamic figure due to what he took from Michelangelo's painting. The bottom half of Mim's figure is pretty much exactly the same as the bottom half of Jonah and the only thing that Mims changed was the direction that the torso twists. Instead of the torso twisting down and to the left (as Jonah does)the torso on Mim's figure twists down to the right. While some will dismiss this type of re-interpetation as cheap or unoriginal it has aided in creating a painting with a similar dynamism to that of Michelangelo's works.

One of Leonardo's long lost paintings has recently been discovered and will be on display at the Met from November 9th until Febuaray 12th. While the painting does not appear completed the degree of realisim achieved in the grisaille should be well worth witnessing in person.

The Super Hero Work Ethic

In my opinion David Kassan embodies the concept of a super hero work ethic. I called him last summer to get advice on balancing art with working a job. After he graduated from college he worked a job while still making progress with his art. He told me that he was able to balance both because he only sleeps 2-3 hours a day and he still keeps the same habit. That is some serious drive but as you can see by the quality of his work his dedication has paid off for a prize greater than sleep.

Atelier Training

The level of former training before attending an atelier is of no importance to one's potential to progress while studying at an atelier. Johua LaRock's work(shown to the left) is an example of this theory. Before attending The Grand Central Academy of Art he did not go to an art school or even study art at the university that he graduated from. But within four years of study at The Grand Central Academy he was able to master a wealth of realist painting skills. That just goes to show that there is no such thing as talent, only hard work.

Today is the last day to see the student show over at The Grand Central Academy on 20 West 44th St. in New York. Here are some of the drawings and paintings that were on display. I don't know if I was allowed to take pictures so if any GCA student is reading this please don't sue me. What I gathered about their drawing method from close observation was that students block their drawings in with an H pencil, brush that layer down and then render on top of that layer with a darker pencil like an HB or 2B. My camera doesn't have enough focus to capture the tight cross hatching so the only way to see what these drawings really look like is to go there yourself.

Jacob Collins Exhibition

Jacob Collins is a contemporary realist painter who is the founder of The Grand Central Academy. His newest work is showing at Adelson Galleries at 19 East 42nd st. in New York. The Exhibition features a selection of preliminary studies along with finished paintings such as the images to the left. The show ends July 28th, so get there while you can.

"HAHA Magazine asked Philly’s Dutch Umbrella Share Program if they would turn over some of their classic white umbrellas to local artists and have them use the umbrellas as a blank canvas. The results of which have been chronicled through The Dutch Umbrella Episodes.

In our first episode we meet Philadelphia Artist, Yis Goodwin, otherwise known as ‘NoseGo’. His style mixes fine art with contemporary. His vibrant use of color and signature “monsters” have earned him spots in shows across the city.
